Steel Powder Coating

Tough, long lasting powder coated finishes for steel and other metal parts.

Tough Powder Coating for Steel

Powder coating metal is one of the toughest ways to protect steel and other ferrous parts from rust, chips and everyday wear.

We provide metal powder coating for mild steel, galvanised steel, stainless and more. Parts are cleaned, prepared and coated so the finish looks good and lasts, whether you need one off brackets or regular batches of powder coated steel for production work.

Types of Steel we Powder Coat

Mild Steel

Mild steel is the most common material we coat and takes powder coating very well when it’s properly cleaned and prepped. It’s used for gates, railings, brackets, frames, posts, panels, shelves and general fabrications.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel can be powder coated to change the look or add a tougher, more uniform finish, but it needs the right prep for strong adhesion. Common items include handrails, balustrades, brackets, frames, housings and architectural metalwork.

Galvanised Steel

Galvanised steel can be powder coated for extra protection and a better-looking finish, but prep is key and the condition of the galvanising matters. You’ll often see it on outdoor steelwork like gates, railings, fencing, bollards, posts and fabricated frames.

Cast Steel

Cast steel can be powder coated, but it may need extra prep as it sometimes can “outgas” during curing, which can affect the finish. It’s common for heavier-duty parts like industrial components, housings, brackets, machine parts and fittings.

Built for Steel & Heavy use

Steel needs proper preparation before coating. If you try to powder coat straight over rust, mill scale or old paint, the finish will fail early.

Our metal powder coating process focuses on:

  • Removing rust, scale and old coatings where required

  • Degreasing to get rid of oils and cutting fluids

  • Checking welds, edges and corners that are prone to thin coverage

  • Applying suitable primers where extra corrosion resistance is needed

The result is powder coated steel that stands up to knocks, weather and everyday use much better than standard wet paint.

Powder Coating Galvanised Steel the Right way

Galvanised steel is great for corrosion resistance, but the zinc layer can cause problems if it is not handled correctly before coating.

We take extra steps when powder coating galvanised steel:

  • Light sweep blasting or mechanical keying to help adhesion

  • Removal of any white rust, dirt or transport contamination

  • Degassing and controlled curing to reduce pinholes and bubbling

Done properly, powder coated galvanised steel gives you a smart, even finish on top of a very long lasting base layer, ideal for gates, railings, handrails and structural work.

Benefits of Powder Coating Steel

Protection against rust & corrosion

Powder coating forms a tough barrier that helps protect steel from moisture and weathering, especially when prep is done properly.

Hard wearing finish for daily use

It stands up well to knocks, scrapes and general wear, making it ideal for gates, railings and fabricated parts.

You get an even finish across faces, welds and edges, with far fewer patchy areas than quick paint jobs.

Clean, smooth & consistent appearance

Choose from a broad range of RAL colours and finishes, including matt, satin, gloss and textured options to suit the look you need.

Wide choice of colours & finishes

Lower maintenance over a longer period

Powder coated steel is easier to keep clean and tends to need less ongoing touch-up than many painted finishes.

When the process is controlled, powder coating delivers consistent colour and finish across batches, which is useful for trade and production work.

Good option for repeat work & batches

Steel is strong and practical, but bare steel will rust quickly if it’s left unprotected, especially outdoors. Powder coating adds a tough barrier that helps resist corrosion and everyday wear, while giving steelwork a clean, consistent finish that stays looking good for longer.

If you want steel parts that stay protected and look right once fitted, powder coating is a solid choice. Tell us what you’re coating, where it will be used and the finish you want, and we’ll recommend the best powder and preparation for the job.

Colours, Textures & Finishes

Powder coating metal is not only about protection. It is also a chance to get the exact look you want.

We can work with:

  • Matt, satin and gloss finishes

  • Smooth, fine texture and more heavy duty finishes for grip or hiding surface marks

  • Chrome effect powders for a bright, metallic look

Chrome powder coating gives a shiny, chrome like appearance, but it is still a type of powder coat rather than true chrome plating. It is a good option where you want a bright metal look with the practicality of a powder coated finish.

Why Choose us to Powder Coat your Steel?

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you remove rust or old paint before powder coating metal?

In many cases, yes. Light rust, loose paint and surface contamination can be removed as part of our preparation. Heavier rust, thick old coatings or badly corroded areas may need extra work, or may not be suitable to coat at all. Send photos or a sample and we will tell you what is realistic before you decide.

What metals can you powder coat?

We can powder coat most common metals including mild steel, galvanised steel, stainless steel and some cast metals. The key is making sure the surface is clean, dry and able to handle the curing temperature. If you are unsure about a particular part, send a photo or sample and we can advise.

What is chrome powder coating?

Chrome powder coating is a type of powder that gives a bright, metallic, chrome like effect. It is not the same as traditional chrome plating, but it offers a similar look with the benefits of a standard powder coated finish. It is often used on metal parts where a shiny effect is wanted without the cost and limits of plating.

Can you powder coat galvanised steel?

Yes, galvanised steel can be powder coated very successfully, but it needs the right preparation. We key the surface, clean it thoroughly and control the curing process to reduce issues like pinholes. This gives you a good looking finish on top of the existing galvanised protection.

How long does powder coated metal last?

There is no single answer because it depends on the metal, environment and how the part is used. With correct prep and a suitable powder, powder coated metal used in normal conditions can keep its finish for many years. For harsher or coastal environments we can recommend specific systems designed for higher corrosion resistance.

Is powder coating steel better than painting it?

For most applications, yes. Powder coating steel gives a thicker, more even layer in a single pass and forms a hard, durable finish when cured. It resists chips and abrasion better than standard wet paint and gives better long term protection when the surface has been prepared properly.
